Are you afraid of the dentist?
Don’t panic.
You are not alone.
Approximately 10% of the population are anxious dental patients.
This usually stems from a childhood fear. And we know that this fear is one of the main barriers to obtaining proper dental treatment.
This can make anyone feel very vulnerable given the position you are in when receiving the treatment. And given the fact that the facial area is one of the most sensitive areas of our body, you’ll understand why people don’t like going to the dentist
This fear manifests itself in many ways – There’s the fear of drills and injections, there’s the fear of pain, you may have highly sensitive teeth, you may have had a traumatic dental experience in the past or you simply have complicated dental problems.
Our staff at Golden Square Dental is very mindful of all of these factors and make every effort to make sure you are comfortable and receive the best care in the most supportive environment.
Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is suitable to use on almost anyone who suffers from dental anxiety. It is ideal for children and adults and a great tool for alleviating your dread of the dentist.
The gas is administered by breathing in a desired mix of nitrous and pure oxygen through a mask placed over the nose to achieve a calm, light feeling.
With nitrous oxide, you are fully conscious and even chat with your dentist while under the effects of the gas. It reaches the brain in around 20 seconds. In addition, the gas acts quickly right before your anxiety level sets in. The effects of nitrous oxide will wear off in time. You can drive home safely and won’t even need a companion to assist you once you’re done.
General Anaesthesia
If you have extreme fear of dentists and dental procedures, you may be a good candidate for general anaesthetic.
This type of sedation is designed for highly anxious patients. General anaesthesia puts you into a deep sleep so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort while being operated on. You won’t be aware of what’s happening during the procedure and you won’t even remember the surgery.
General anaesthesia is administered by injecting the medicine intravenously. Once you are asleep, your dentists at Golden Square Dental will closely monitor you to observe your blood pressure, pulse and breathing. Once everything checks out, then the operation starts.
