What Causes Knocked Out Tooth?

A knocked-out, or avulsed, tooth can happen to anyone and can happen instantly. The following are common causes of knocked out teeth:

  • Accidental falls
  • Sports activities
  • Car accidents
  • Work-related trauma

First Aid Steps

The first thing to remember for this dental emergency is the 30-minute critical time. The chances of your knocked out tooth being re-implanted depends largely on the severity of the damage and the how quickly you respond.

Another important thing to consider is that the first aid steps for a knocked out permanent tooth are different from those for a knocked out baby tooth.

Around 12-13 years old, most people will have all of their permanent tooth. The third molars will erupt around 17-25 years old. Prior to those ages, re-implantation of a knocked out baby tooth should only be handled by your dentist lest you accidentally damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

  • Secure the tooth immediately.
  • Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, gently wash it in a bowl of lukewarm water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub or rub the tooth.
  • If it’s not dirty, do not do anything to it.
  • Try to reinsert the tooth into place by biting down gently into a clean piece of material.
  • If you cannot reinsert it, soak the tooth in milk, saline, or your saliva.
  • Go to your dentist immediately.

Knocked Out Baby Tooth

  • Secure the tooth immediately.
  • Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, gently wash it in a bowl of lukewarm water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub or rub the tooth.
  • If it’s not dirty, do not do anything to it.
  • Soak it in milk, saline, or saliva.
  • Rinse your child’s mouth and press a cold compress on the cheek if there is swelling.
  • Go to your dentist immediately.

Treatment At Golden Square Dental

If the tooth has been reinserted, your dentist will check if it is properly positioned through an X-ray. If not, your dentist will reinsert it properly by numbing the area first.

To keep the reinserted tooth in place, your dentist might use a splinting technique that will have to stay in place for days to weeks.
